Canon EOS R Battery Life:ĮOS R battery life rated by Cipa standards goes to 370 shots. In this article, we will discuss its battery life and if it can hold to the standards we are looking for. ![]() This is a great camera for content creators, due to its 4k recording capabilities. It has a great amount of 5655 AF points and 5 fps burst shooting with continuous AF. It sports the familiar 30.3-megapixel CMOS sensor which we have seen on the EOS 5D MARK IV DSLR. This is a great mid-range camera that gave Canon a boost on their mirrorless lineup. I wouldn't think the grip needs to give the camera any more battery charge information than past grips, so I don't know what the additional data port could be about.īut if someone needs to have long-term power-such as for an all-day time lapse-I would use the AC adapter (which does not require the battery grip and can be bought for as little as $25) along with a third-party AC battery pack like the Paul C Buff Vagabond. All the big dogs like the Canon, Nikon, Panasonic announced their full-frame mirrorless cameras. I can't see any additional function in this grip is the PC contact (which is a simple two-pole jack). This battery grip is different from previous grips in that it has a separate data port on the left side doing a lot more communication with the camera than battery grips have in the past. The cameras have always been "constant on" in terms of recognizing system changes, like changing lenses, cards, and batteries even while switched "off." It's been the case with all of Canon's digital cameras (at least the DSLRs) that the on/off switch merely tells the system to ignore other user input. It’s fooling the camera that there is enough battery power to not turn off and protect from a brown out while the grip is charging itself.Ĭonsidering this is canon first attempt at pd, future models will incorporate charging while using. Using the battery grip is almost like a hack. ![]() Has anyone noticed that even at off position the camera truly isn’t off? Noticed the display still shows the shooting mode or during error 70 u have to pop the battery out because the switch isn’t sending the proper interrupt. I bet the code is written by canon to only activate when power is switched to off position. I didn’t believe it but I couldn’t get my third party to charge. One thing, canon has written in their code to check battery model. I bought a $25 powerbank that is pd certified and it works too. I bought me a $11 wall outlet from monoprice with two usbc cables and that is what i use when I travel. To be honest i was mad at how much it cost when all it is really doing is following power delivery standard. User - Do you have nay thoughts on how using an AC power back with the Canon AC Adapter would work? It seems like the options for longer shooting time are: It appears that Canon's decision makes sense. I do a lot of time lapse with my go pro and without the ability to add a powerbank it would be much harder. Has anyone notice how much slower the camera charges via pd outlet vs taking battery out and using wall adapter? I’m guessing canon requires pd standard but slow charges to not risk overcharging. Usbc with pd can charge at an crazy watts. The other risk canon wanted to avoid is overcharging. This is why the system only supports pd standard and not just any high charging power bricks. Microsoft addressed this on their surface pro by stop charging the battery and run on the adapter. Nothing worse for an electronics then brown out. The risk is if the the camera doesn’t get enough power while the system is charging. Usb 1.0 uart has power built into the standard since late 90’s but no one had any hardware for it. The problem has always been the power source. Yes I work for the world largest network manufacturer and my background is engineering.Ĭharging and using an electronic device has been around since usb early days. I’m not clear? Are you an electronics engineer and have been able to ascertain that the R can do this safely without adding weight to the camera? Or are you speculating? I’m guessing canon didn’t implement this because they didn’t want the risk and troubleshooting. So since the camera supports pd, in theory it can support charging and using. ![]() Usbc and pd are standards which has more than enough power to charge and use a device. It should be possible to use the USB both for battery charging and as AC adapter. Among others I use the R with AC adapter for microphotography and it is very annoying that I have to change the adapter for a battery when I want to use the camera otherwise.
